George Smart was a tailor from Kent who made pictures and figures out of scraps of left-over cloth. He specialised in portraits of local ‘characters’ such as this postman identified as ’Old Bright’, which he used as the subject of several collages. To the bottom right is ‘Smart’s Repository’, where the artist exhibited his cloth pictures.
