November – The Landscape at Compton Verney
Welcome to this ‘November’ article, the eleventh in a series of posts which aim to review, through photographs, twelve months of activity in and around the diverse landscape of Compton Verney. It’s a historic landscape that has seen much change, from the shaping of the areas as new plants establish to the visual delight gained from one of a number of artistic interactions.
There are huge changes in the atmosphere from the busiest of open days to quiet days when just bird song can be heard. Either way, visually the landscape changes minute by minute and it’s wonderful to be there to experience it – and on occasion capture an image or two!

In November, mist is often seen hanging above the lake and dew coats everything in sight. It’s lovely and refreshing to be outside on days like these, especially when the sun tries its best to burn away the moisture. © Compton Verney / Gary Webb 2014
The Lime tree grove, a core of 18th century trees with later additions form a horse-shoe arrangement, originally breaking the landscape view. Winter Aconites are well established beneath the trees, and mowing continues through November to mulch any leaves that aren’t blown away. © Compton Verney / Gary Webb 2014

The majestic Cedar of Lebanon has stood proudly in the centre of the front lawn at Compton Verney since the 1700’s. Passed by all visitors, it perfectly breaks up the expansive front lawn, just as originally intended. © Compton Verney / Gary Webb 2014

Blue sky days are always welcome, but when they coincide with a calm lake the results are breath-taking. In this image you can see the stately London Plane beside the bridge, three evergreen Wellingtonias, and the rich browns of the Alder trees. © Compton Verney / Gary Webb 2014
Last but not least is a sunset view, taken from the Adam Bridge. Walking out every evening it is hard not to stop every time to snap a new photo from this bridge – it is ever changing… © Compton Verney / Gary Webb 2014
November in the grounds at Compton Verney is a varied time work-wise, driven as always by the weather. We are of course busy keeping the grounds tidy for each open day, but the lawns can be damp and easily damaged so travelling around can be quite an issue. Preparing for the December tree planting project in the East Park was also very much in mind along with our contribution towards Christmas and the Winter Weekends.
